As easily might be guessed, the most popular topic on talk radio in the year gone by was "sex/scandal/gossip." According to the annual Talkers Magazine survey, other topics in the top 10 included, in descending order, politics, crime/violence, the economy, the legal system, civil rights, foreign affairs, the media/values, sports and arts/entertainment.

According to Talkers, the list is extremely "top heavy," meaning that the first two topics "absolutely dominated talk-radio conversation in 1998."

The same goes for the first three personalities in the "people" category, those being Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky and Kenneth Starr.

The list includes more than 100 talked-about personalities, terminating with Rush Limbaugh. Others in the top 10 included Hillary Rodham Clinton, Paula Jones, Linda Tripp, Newt Gingrich, Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa, Saddam Hussein and Yassar Arafat/Benjamin Netanyahu.

In the "events" category, the Clinton sex scandals placed first, followed by the Starr investigation coupled with the impeachment process in second place. …
