ROUTE TO THE JOB: "After I finished my degree in geography and history at Keele University, I moved down to London in 1979. I had the opportunity of a job as an insurance clerk at General Accident but decided to take a job in a small map shop next to the British Museum. I ended up being their "Girl Friday", making the tea and coffee, dealing with clients and visiting galleries, and I quickly learnt a great deal about maps. I gradually came to know a lot of people in the trade, from private clients to dealers, and subsequently went on to work for three other map dealers. In 1987, I was offered a job at Sotheby's as a map cataloguer and am now deputy director of the book department, my specialist subject being maps and atlases."

TYPICAL DAY: "No two days are alike, but most of my time is spent cataloguing maps and atlases, dealing with client enquiries and offering advice to people who bring maps in for valuation. Other day-to-day responsibilities include collecting material for map auctions, which can involve frequent trips to Europe and the US as well as visiting clients at home. …
