So is this the best of times or the worst of times? In a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll, 46 percent of those responding agreed with the statement, "America is in a time of crisis, facing huge problems that threaten the country." On the other hand, 41 percent said they believe that "America is in a time of peace and prosperity, facing fewer problems than at most times in history."

It's fairly easy to empathize with the other 13 percent, who replied that they are not sure. Anyway, folks seem to think there's a brighter day on the horizon: A substantial 68 per cent of respondents said they expect this year to be better than the one just gone by, while only 6 percent think it will be worse. Some 14 percent predict it will be about the same, and a mere 2 percent just aren't sure.

One of the more interesting findings in the poll was that 46 percent of those surveyed don't approve of the job Congress is doing, an upward shift of 4 percent from the same time a year ago. The same group also lost a bit of their esteem for President Clinton, with 65 percent approving of his work as opposed to 67 percent in a similar survey a year back. …
