A majority of American women -- 53 percent -- now support the pro-life position on abortion, according to a survey commissioned by the Center for Gender Equality, a feminist advocacy group headed by former Planned Parenthood executive director Faye Wattleton. The primary finding of the survey was that American women markedly have moved toward accepting religious activism in politics. It found more women than in the recent past participating in organized religion and prayer and expressing the belief that religion provided them with ethical standards and the feeling of being part of a supportive community.

The survey found nearly no objections to the influence of religious groups and leaders on public-school education but it also showed that 73 percent of women support providing birth-control information in schools. By a 2-1 ratio, respondents had a favorable attitude toward the Christian Coalition's impact on women's lives. On abortion, it showed a shift of 8 percent over survey in the direction of restrictions or outlawing the procedure. …
