The Gale Group has announced in two separate news releases that it previewed its first integrated products at the ALA Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia, In another announcement, Gale said that it has added more content to its Literature Resource Center.

Biography Resource Center

The Gale Group previewed the Biography Resource Center, an online reference that combines data from 50 biographical databases from the former Gale Research with information from 270 periodicals available through the former LAC. The service is designed for patrons in public and academic libraries who need information on newsmakers in virtually every field and from every era, according to the company.

Available on GaleNet. Gale's Internet information service, the Biography Resource Center includes 132,000 in-depth narrative biographies specially written to address the needs of library patrons, tips on how to conduct effective biographical research, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles that amplify and update the narrative biographies. The product is designed to be a "living" product with a Person of the Week feature that profiles individuals currently in the news. While newsmakers of 1999 may dominate the Welcome Page, content is more varied. For example, a search for "politicians" returns a results list that includes Dale Bumpers, Bill Clinton, and Julius Caesar.

Gale reports that the search interface is graphical and simple, allowing it to be used by just about any library patron, regardless of computer skill. A custom search function serves the needs of more-experienced researchers.

The Gale Group School Collection

Gale also previewed a service that integrates the resources of the former Gale Research, IAC, and Primary Source Media. The Gale Group School Collection unites references specifically for students through a common menu, allowing them to gather primary documents, magazine and newspaper articles, and curriculum-related reference works through a single Internet gateway.

The collections are designed for targeted grade ranges and are available in elementary, middle school, and two high school versions.

"This is a first step in integration of resources we have within The Gale Group," said Dedria Bryfonski, president of The Gale Group's Library/Education Division.
