Technology Conference

A major EU-US scientific conference took place in Washington recently where participants agreed to begin joint work as early as this fall on four areas of common interest set out in the recently signed European Union-United States Science and Technology (S&T) Agreement.

The more than 300 participants who attended the conference agreed to begin cooperation in the following areas:

climate change prediction (e.g. predictability of weather patterns, comparison of forecasting models);

information science and technology (e.g. materials research, digital libraries and distance learning);

multimodal and intelligent transportation systems (surface and maritime); and

endocrine disruptors (the study on the effects of chemicals in the environment on human and animal health).

Technology Exhibit

The world's leading information technology companies recently offered an exhibit in Santiago, Chile to demonstrate how cutting-edge technology in the industry can be directly applied to achieving cost-effective economic and social advances for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in the areas of education and health.

Another central theme of the exhibit titled, "Information and Communications Technology: Strengthening the Hemisphere for the 21st Century," is the importance of information technology as an engine for economic and social development. Technology solutions that help the economically and socially disadvantaged were on display at the exhibit which was organized by the Informatics 2000 Initiative of the Inter-American Development Bank. …
