Healthy Communities for Healthy Children is Theme

The 1999 Your City's Families Conference is scheduled for September 15-19, 1999 in Baltimore, Md. The conference theme will focus on "healthy communities for healthy children and families." It will be held in cooperation with CityMatCH (an organization of urban maternal and child health professionals).

This fourth Your City's Families (YCF) conference will feature keynote presentations, workshops, site visits, and skill building sessions. Planners include local elected officials who have participated in previous conferences; members of the NLC Youth, Education, and Families Council; key leaders in maternal, child, and community health; and staff from the two co-sponsoring groups.

Now held every two years, the first YCF conference was held in 1993 when over 30 cities and towns sent teams to this unique and action-oriented event. The 1995 Conference focused on the connections between supporting strong families and building safer communities. The Conference outcomes are described in a 1996 publication, Your City's Families: Putting Youth in the Picture.

The 1997 Conference was the most successful to date. Over 350 people from 90 cities attended and focused attention on creating and enhancing family-friendly communities. They learned about constituency building, connecting city hall with public schools, and creating youth master plans. A special edition of New Directions on "Your City's Families" details the Conference outcomes and content, especially in regard to municipal government assistance in strengthening families. …
