LEPTOSPIROSIS OUTBREAK

Late last year, there were outbreaks of leptospirosis in Kazakhstan and north and northwest Thailand. Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua were also affected following Hurricane Mitch's onslaught on Central America. Outbreaks of this kind are uncommon but the disease does occasionally occur in those partaking in fresh water sports, bathers and campers in areas where the water is contaminated. It can also be an occupational hazard to rice and sugar cane field workers, military troops, sewer workers and farmers.

DENGUE DOWN UNDER

The number of cases of dengue fever reported in Queensland has increased from 70 in 1997 to 400 in 1998, many from the north of the territory. There are fears that with global warming and the area's proximity to southeast Asia where the disease is endemic, that larger outbreaks may be seen in the future.
