Bill's Behavior with Monica Raises the B-Word

While the whole country was tuning into the latest episode of As Monica Turns, starring the valley girl and Barbara Walters, another story was ping-ponging around Washington and New York circles. The New York Post reported that a new book charges the Israeli intelligence agency, or Mossad, listened to Monica and the president during their late-night telephone-sex events. The book apparently uses the B-word: blackmail.

According to Gideon's Spies -- The Secret History of the Mossad by the respected British writer Gordon Thomas, the inspector general of Mossad, Danny Yatom, taped some 30 X-rated hours of conversations between the president and Lewinsky. Thomas claims Tel Aviv used the tapes to stop the hunt for an Israeli intelligence asset in the White House, a mole code-named "MEGA." Although the New York Post report says the Justice Department and FBI have been looking for MEGA for more than a year, Israel heatedly denies placing moles or black-mailing anyone. But Thomas claims that "FBI counterintelligence, which had also been taping Monica's calls, got the message and decided to back off."

"We've put out no statement on that," FBI spokesman Steven Berry tells news alert! The Post suggested that the alleged incident "could even support Hillary Clinton's charge that a 'vast, right-wing conspiracy' was out to destroy her husband's presidency." More important, the story about Mossad resonated with a famous paragraph in the Starr referral:

"According to Ms. Lewinsky, she and the president had a lengthy conversation that day. He told her that he suspected that a foreign embassy (he did not specify which one) was tapping his telephones, and he proposed cover stories. If ever questioned, she should say that the two of them were just friends. If anyone ever asked about their phone sex, she should say that they knew their calls were being monitored all along, and the phone sex was just a put-on. …
