I'M SURE WE'VE ALL HEARD THAT WE NOW live in The Information Age. According to the pundits, the personal computer has placed all the world's knowledge at our fingertips. We can now retreat to our den with our PC and become all-knowing without the inconvenience of dealing with other people. The Internet is in and networking in-person is out.

If you have tried the above formula for success, you've likely discovered that it isn't the Information Highway, but the Data Highway. Information that can be fact or fiction, helpful or misleading, current or superseded. There is an avalanche of information from which you must try to glean correct, useful and applicable data.

One of the major advantages of membership in RIMS is the opportunity to meet other risk managers. Through networking, we are able to draw on our experience and the insight of others in the field to help us do our jobs better. Perhaps our colleagues can help us determine what data source is most useful for our particular situation. …
