Keep it in Context

The February Techniques was one of the best. The focus [on applied learning] was timely. Career and technical educators must address what they are doing to improve students' academic as well as technical achievement. The articles contain theory and research as well as practical teaching ideas and resources.

In Ohio, we are developing a new curriculum framework for career-focused education based on integrated academic and technical competencies (ITACs). I was pleased to read the research support for the contextual classroom. Our ITACs feature real-life workplace scenarios which engage learners in solving problems or performing tasks to demonstrate knowledge and skills in context.

This issue recognizes both the power and the challenge to career and technical educators to implement contextual learning and to be held accountable for academic achievement. Again, I applaud you for this necessary communication.
