* A complaint filed against a United Methodist pastor in Iowa for participating in a "holy union" service for two women in California earlier this year has been dismissed. David Holmes of Council Bluffs was named in a complaint filed January 21 with Iowa Bishop Charles W. Jordan. The complaint accused Holmes of violating the denomination's ban on clergy participation in same-sex ceremonies. Jordan found that Holmes's action was restricted to that of "witness and solidarity" and thus did not violate the denomination's discipline. Holmes was among nearly 100 clergy at the January 16 ceremony in Sacramento. In California, Bishop Melvin Talbert has launched a probe of 69 UMC pastors who participated in the union service to see if any of those clerics should be brought to church trial for violating church law.

In a related development, UMC minister Jimmy Creech performed a same-sex union ceremony on April 24 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It was the first such ceremony Creech has conducted since he was narrowly acquitted of violating church law for uniting two women in 1997. …
