Californians Beware: The Code of the West in Washington

Spokane County, Wash., long a haven for California residents wishing to get away from the smog and congestion, has decided to provide a little instructional guide for those thinking of moving in from outside. The guide, called Code of the West, went through a 3,000-copy printing and is on the county's Website at www.spokanecounty.-org/lrp/codewest/codewest.html. The name comes from the works of Western novelist Zane Grey.

"We offer this information to help citizens of Spokane County who wish to follow in the footsteps of those rugged individualists [who won the West] and live outside the metropolitan area" says the introduction.

Although this Web page says that the county does not want to dissuade people from moving to the state of Washington, it is hard to believe that one could read it any other way. Unlike the slick development brochures that many locations publish hoping to attract new investment, Code of the West dwells on negative aspects of life in Spokane County. Some extracts that for the people liked:
