Article excerpt

Open Text Corporation has announced the release of the Livelink Catalogued Library module. Livelink Catalogued Library integrates Open Text's Livelink and BASIS Techlib products, extending the reach of the corporate library by making it a part of a company's enterprise knowledge architecture.

Livelink Catalogued Library provides Livelink users with integrated access to library collections and cataloged electronic resources managed by BASIS Techlib. BASIS Techlib is a fully Web-based integrated library system that automates cataloging, authority control, circulation, serials control, and acquisitions.

"This integration of Livelink and BASIS Techlib helps librarians encourage collaboration by linking knowledge seekers with knowledge providers," said Ali Al-Assam, managing director of Knowledgeview, Ltd., an Open Text customer. "In the virtual library, a multifaceted library catalog like Livelink Catalogued Library can enhance the librarian's role as knowledge broker."

Livelink Catalogued Library activates the "card catalog," allowing users to locate library collections and cataloged digital content from within Livelink. The integration adds the collaborative features of Livelink to the information access role, differentiating it from the traditional library catalog. Livelink Catalogued Library enriches Livelink with a new workspace for content-centric collaboration. In this workspace, knowledge workers can post comments, access reviews, or participate in content-centric discussions. They can also identify colleagues with similar interests or query expertise directories. Livelink becomes a vehicle to facilitate knowledge discovery and stimulate structured collaboration associated with cataloged resources.

"Open Text has finally integrated collaborative document computing with the structured corporate library in a common framework. Librarians can connect users and research teams with cataloged documents and project folders through the corporate intranet," said Mike Cunningham, president and CEO of Harvard Computing Group. "This now integrates the corporate library fully into a collaborative enterprise knowledge network. The fusion of these technologies has been long overdue in the marketplace. The benefits will be significant for those organizations taking advantage of both structured library and interactive approaches. …
