R.R. Bowker to Develop Book-Mapping Software

R.R. Bowker has announced that it is developing mapping software to link the two standard subject-coding schemes used to identify the subjects of books published in the U.S. and U.K.

The mapping software by Bowker, a business unit of Cahners Business Information, will allow potential book buyers in the U.K. and the U.S. to search for books published in either country utilizing one unified scheme. Currently, there is no means of cross-identification of the subjects of books published in the two countries.

Books coded in the U.K. are identified through BIC Subject Codes, developed by the London-based organization Book Industry Communication. Books coded in the U.S. are identified by the BISAC Subject Codes, which are issued by the Book and Serials Industry Communication (BASIC) in New York.

"The English-speaking book world has been waiting for a unified system," said Charles Halpin, senior vice president of the book publishing group at Cahners, which includes Bowker and the magazines Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. "With the growing internationalization of English-language publishing, it has become crucial for book buyers to be able to search for books published in either country using one system.

"Bowker's mapping software will be completed in the near future and will be given to both BIC and BASIC for free distribution to the industry," Halpin said. …
