Economic downturn in the Asia-Pacific region appears to have had a minimal impact on Leighton Asia's regional activities.

Work in hand for 1997-98 was valued at A$545 million, down only 2 per cent compared to the previous year.

Building remained the company's largest market last year, representing 54 per cent (A$219 million) of revenue, while engineering and infrastructure accounted for 43 per cent, or A$171 million.

Leighton Asia is a subsidiary of Australia's largest construction group, Leighton Holdings Limited, and is one of Asia's largest broad-based construction contractors.

Core activities include construction, design and construction management, and total project management in the areas of civil engineering, building, foundation engineering, mechanical and process engineering, and contract mining.

Operations are located throughout Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

Based on the current level of work in hand, Leighton Asia has forecast revenue will increase in 1998-99, with Hong Kong and the Philippines holding the most potential.

During 1997-98, Hong Kong remained Leighton Asia's primary market and generated 71 per cent of overall revenue, compared to 64 per cent the previous year.

Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited, a subsidiary of Leighton Asia, were recently awarded a HK$150 million contract to install two submarine fresh-water pipelines across Hong Kong's Ma Wan Channel.

Additional works include construction of connection chambers, installation of a feeding pipeline to the public water main, and re-construction of an existing car park. …
