Today in Melbourne a distinguished line-up of political and business speakers will take the stage at the first Australia Summit to discuss the future of business and investment in Asia Pacific.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Tung Chee Hwa, joins Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Commerce, Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry, Lee Yock Suan, adviser to the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Yoshihiro Sakamoto, and the Director General of Vietnam's Ministry of Planning and Investment, Dr Nguyen Bich Dat as key speakers at the Summit.

The Indonesian Ambassador in Australia, Sastrohandoyo Wiryono, is also speaking, along with Australia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Tim Fischer, the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, and the Australian Minister for Industry, Science and Tourism, John Moore.

Fischer said such a high calibre of speakers reflects the importance of the event: "The Australia Summit is shaping up to be the most important trade and investment event to take place in Australia this year".

In addition, the summit, operating under the theme Regional Renewal--Opportunity in a Time of Challenge, features presentations from finance and business leaders.

These speakers will focus on the short term challenges of operating in Asia and the choices facing senior management moving into the next century.

Finance and business leaders addressing delegates include the vice president of the east region at the Asian Development Bank, Peter Sullivan, the deputy director of the International Monetary Fund Asia Pacific, David Nellor, and the East Asia and Pacific regional vice president of the World Bank, Jean-Michel Severino.

Australian business leaders present include the chief executive officer of the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Banking Group, John McFarlane, the group managing director of National Mutual, Geoff Tomlinson, and the managing director and chief executive officer of Bonlac Foods, Phil Scanlan. …
