CATHOLIC HEALTHCARE West signed a new labor contract July 5 with 1,000 registered nurses in the San Francisco area, giving them an 8 percent salary increase over two years. The hospital chain also agreed to create a response team to resolve staffing disputes as they occur. The team will include three persons appointed by management and three designated by the nurses.

THE PATRIARCH of the Armenian Apostolic church, Catholicos Karekin, 66, died June 29 in Etchmiadzin, Armenia, .after a long struggle with cancer. Karekin was known as a bridge-builder who forged links with other Christians, especially the Catholic church.

CARDINAL JOHN O'CONNOR of New York dediCated the DePaul House of Studies for Deaf Seminarians in Yonkers, N.Y., May 21. The house is the first in the world to be dedicated exclusively to the training of deaf priests.

A COUNTRY GRAND JURY indicted James Kopp June 24 for the slaying of Dr. Barnett Slepian, the abortion provider who was shot through his kitchen window in a Buffalo, N.Y., suburb. A federal grand jury continues to hear evidence in the shooting, which occurred Oct. 23, although Kopp has yet to be caught. Kopp was added to the FBI's Ten

WOMEN hold nearly 47 percent of U.S. diocesan administrative and professional positions, up 2 percent from 1995, according to a survey released by the U.S. bishops' Committee on Women in Society and in the Church. Data from 1998 shows that women hold just over a quarter of top diocesan jobs, 40 to 52 percent of middle management positions, and more than 60 percent of lower-level professional slots. …
