Witches and warlocks in the U.S. military, who held a ceremony late last month outside the Jefferson Memorial to honor the deist father of the religious separation doctrine enshrined in the Supreme Court's view of the Constitution, have gotten a bit of grudging support from a surprising source: televangelist Pat Robertson.

In June, according to the Military Pagan Network, "about 70 pagans invoked the power of the Old Gods and charged magical talismans -- postcards of the Statue of Liberty with a quote from Thomas Jefferson on the back -- in support of religious freedom." Although many conservatives on Capitol Hill, including Georgia Republican Rep. Bob Barr, have called for denying full religious standing to pagans, witches and the like in the military, Robertson seems a bit more willing to accept pagans in the military.

"The power of Christianity is so strong that I'm not worried about a little coven of witches running around doing their things," Robertson told an audience of his program on the Christian Broadcasting Network. …
