Go ahead, bite the Big Apple," Rolling Stone Mick Jagger sang in the 1980s--an invitation that first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, said to be chewing over a run for the U.S. Senate in the Empire State, obviously has taken to heart. But in the process she also has taken another bite ... this one out of taxpayers.

The first lady has made 66 solo trips to New York during her White House years, including 10 flights in just the first five-and-a-half months of this year--all at taxpayer expense. But neither the White House nor the Democratic National Committee, or DNC, will comment on how much the trips have cost, nor will they say how much the government has been reimbursed for the portions of Clinton's trips that are overtly political in nature.

"We should know where every nickel goes," says Charles Lewis, executive director of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan group that has studied such campaign travels. …
