Run This Up Your DOD Flagpole!

Hot on the heels of this column's assertion that the Defense Department, or DOD, might consider a kinder, gentler approach to its mandatory anthrax-vaccination program, the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Times newspapers jumped on the bandwagon with a similar, if rather more formally stated, proposal. While we here in the briefs bunker would be startled out of our brogans if the DOD bigwigs even acknowledged our little aside, the military-titled Times publications take themselves far more seriously. In consequence, they assuredly have aroused the ire of Secretary of Defense William Cohen and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Henry Shelton.

The two defense biggies winged off a letter to the various Times publications saying, "Wearing helmets in battle isn't voluntary because everybody needs protection," and the same principle holds for the anthrax vaccinations. "Allowing a voluntary vaccination program is inadequate in the face of this deadly threat."

And furthermore, "It would be unconscionable not to protect our entire force with a safe and effective vaccine. …
