Xiomara Batista's world isn't one that encourages her to speak out. First generation DominicanAmerican, with a devoutly religious mother on the one hand and Harlem drug dealers catcalling her from the street on the other, Xiomara is struggling to define herself. She bristles at how others project their desires, insecurities and patriarchal attitudes towards her and, on the outside at least, has learned to let her fists and fierceness do the talking. Secretly, however, she pours herself into poems which she keeps in a notebook under the bed. It's here that we see her most intimate thoughts and see the toll the expectations of others take. A slam poetry club offers Xiomara a route to finding and embracing her own voice, and even though speaking her words out loud for the first time seems terrifying, she begins to dare to imagine a different future. …
