Literacy Leadership

Take a leadership role and make your library the community's primary family literacy provider, urges author Carole Talan in Founding and Funding Family Literacy Programs: A How-To-Do-It Manual. Talan provides step-by-step instructions on assessing community needs, creating literacy programs, and wooing potential funders. Included are camera-ready forms, sample lessons, agenda, manuals, and curriculum guides.

School Library Media Duo

Two new books from Libraries Unlimited focus on school library media programs:

Editor Ken Haycock assembles 39 articles (recent reprints from Emergency Librarian) on current trends in Foundations for Effective School Library Media Programs. Haycock organizes the articles in seven sections: foundations, the school context, role clarification, information literacy, collaborative planning and teaching, program development, and accountability.

With index, 331 p., $55 from Libraries Unlimited, P[copyright]B 6633, Englewood, CO 80155 (1-56308-720-0).

Taking the long view, editor Kathy Howard Latrobe examines the development of the school library media center in The Emerging School Library Media Center: Historical Issues and Perspectives. Latrobe and her collaborators examine how the evolution of the school library media center has been shaped by the education of school librarians, professional organizations, standards and guidelines, accreditation associations, and technology.

With index, 288 p., $42 from Libraries Unlimited, POB 6633, Englewood, CO 80155 (1-56308-389-2).

Learn the Licensing Language

Authors Arlene Bielefield and Lawrence Cheeseman cut through the mumbo jumbo surrounding software-licensing with Interpreting and Negotiating Licensing Agreements: A Guidebook for the Library, Research and Teaching Professions.

The book can help non-lawyers understand what a license should cover, which licensing agreements are appropriate, and when to negotiate. Bielefield and Cheeseman include charts and checklists to help readers evaluate licenses and understand standard and nonstandard clauses.

With index and glossary, 162 p., paperback, $55 from Neal-Schuman Publishers, 100 Varick St., New York, NY 10013 (1-55570-324-0).

Is It Legal?

A very handy feature of R. S. Talab's Commonsense Copyright: A Guide for Educators and Librarians (2nd ed.) is the "can do" and "cannot do" sections in each chapter. At a glance readers can quickly determine appropriate copyright behavior.

Updating the 1986 edition with information through the end of 1998, Talab discusses the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and also examines the uses of copyrighted materials; copyright and computer-based systems, including the Internet and distance learning; and permissions and policy development.

With index, 292 p., paperback, $39.95 from McFarland Publishers, POB 611, Jefferson, NC 28640 (0-78640675-5).

Intelligent-Building Quotient

Worldwide experts on library buildings pooled their talents at the 10th seminar of the IFLA Section on Library Buildings and Equipment in 1997 in Amsterdam. The proceedings of the seminar are now published in Intelligent Library Buildings.

Editors Marie-Francoise Bisbrouck and Marc Chauveinc share presentations on the use of space, creating a user-friendly environment, developing a digital library, and using energy efficiently. Directors who oversaw construction of the respective facilities describe the realization of the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany; the Venezuelan National Library; the Central Library of the Hague and the Bibliotheek Rotterdam in the Netherlands; and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. …
