Academic Press Announces Its IDEAL Reference, Expands into Asia

Academic Press has announced that it will combine its encyclopedias with its online publishing platform, IDEAL, to form IDEAL Reference, a collection of online encyclopedias and reference works. The company has also announced that IDEAL has significantly expanded its presence into Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.

While the official launch of IDEAL Reference will not take place until January 1, 2000, two Academic Press encyclopedias are already available online (Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition and Encyclopedia of Immunology, second edition), and three more will be available this fall: Encyclopedia of Virology, second edition; "Encyclopedia of Food Microbiology; and Encyclopedia of Spectroscopy and Spectrometry. Customers who purchase the print editions of these works are eligible to access the online versions. Online access is available to the buyer's entire institution and is controlled via IP address. This access is free of charge through 2000. Following the initial free-access period, those buyers interested in maintaining access will be charged an annual $75 account-maintenance fee.

Company president Pieter Bolman believes that the time is right for Academic Press to expand its online offerings. "In many respects the Web is an ideal reference tool. One of the difficulties is the uncertainty about the quality of the reference sources that can be found on the Web. Our reference program is critically acclaimed, and the challenge in migrating it to the online environment is to find out what value can be added beyond the enhanced search-and-retrieval capabilities," he said.

Bolman said: "Having [the content] on one platform will allow us to interlink individual works as well as link with other information sources on IDEAL (e.g., our journals; the Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology; our daily science news service, InScight; and, in the near future, our books serials and textbooks). …
