Keane and King Don't like the Way 'Dysfunctional' Functions: They Have Lawyer Contact 'Dysfunctional Family Circus' Web Site, Which Includes Risque Captions

A Web site parodying "The Family Circus" has stopped posting new images after receiving a letter from an attorney representing cartoonist Bil Keane and King Features Syndicate.

The 4-year-old "Dysfunctional Family Circus" site - operated by Greg Galcik, 29, a Chicago-based Web developer - displayed Keane's panels and invited visitors to submit their own captions. Many were risque.

Keane tolerated the site for a while. "I don't object to parody of my feature, and some of the stuff was humorous," he told E&P. But the cartoonist began to reconsider his tolerance after getting a number of letters from readers dismayed with the parody site (http://www.spinnwebe.com/dfc/).

"I thought the 'Dysfunctional Family Circus' was injuring the precious creation I've spent almost 40 years building," Keane said. "And there are many children on the Internet who might see some of this nasty material. I have a lot of kid readers."

So Keane contacted King, and an attorney's letter was sent. …
