STN International Unveils New Databases

Article excerpt

STN International, an online host for scientific and technical information, has extended its range of online offerings to include five more specialized databases: ADISINSIGHT, ADISALERTS, MEDICONF DKF, and NETFIRST.

The ADISINSIGHT and ADISALERTS files on STN provide information on current pharmaceutical research and development. ADISINSIGHT informs on the latest international news in the field of pharmaceutical research and development, while ADISALERTS contains references to publications on pharmaceutical issues. Both information services have been used by the pharmaceutical industry for many years in printed format. MEDICONF is a directory containing forthcoming worldwide conferences, trade shows, symposia, exhibitions, and seminars in the fields of medicine, pharmacology, and biotechnology. A bibliographic database, DKF references literature on all aspects of vehicle construction. Available now on STN as an online database, OCLC's comprehensive compilation of Internet addresses, NETFIRST, is of interest to librarians and library users.

ADISINSIGHT (the online version of Adis R&D Insight) tracks records from the earliest laboratory reports through their world market launch. Each document contains the chemical name, generic names, synonyms, trade names, chemical structure, and CAS Registry Numbers of the pharmaceutical. Each of these data may be entered as a search term and will lead the searcher to the relevant document. Additional information available in a document includes originators and licensees, key events in the pharmaceutical's development, and key properties of the pharmaceutical (i.e., mechanism of action and therapeutic indication).

A bibliographic database, ADISALERTS (Adis LMS Drug Alerts information service) presents highly structured evaluations of key papers published in more than 2,300 international medical and biomedical journals on drugs, drug therapy, adverse drug reactions, and pharmacoeconomics. All other papers that are not evaluated are indexed according to the original bibliographic reference. ADISALERTS also provides an evaluation score for clinical trials as an independent guide to the quality of the trial, design, and reporting. Dating back to 1983, the database is updated weekly. …
