Congressional Information Service, Inc. Redesigns LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe

Article excerpt

Congressional Information Service, Inc. (CIS) has announced the availability of its completely redesigned LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe Web service for university students and faculty.

According to the announcement, nine U.S. universities worked with CIS as design partners to improve the service's functionality, content, and look and feel. Participating design partners included California State University at Los Angeles, College of William & Mary, Georgia State University, Harvard University, Ohio State University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Richmond, and University of Washington.

The company reports that LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe is currently available to more than 5.2 million full-time equivalent undergraduate and graduate students plus faculty and staff at over 1,000 participating institutions--representing nearly three-quarters of all college and university students in the U.S. The service was introduced in August 1997.

In order to ensure the complete user focus of the redesign, the company initiated a CIS Design Partners program, incorporating a combination of librarians, students, and faculty at nine U.S. universities. CIS says that the redesigned LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe is the result of the combined efforts of the design partners working with CIS market research, CIS product development, and a dedicated CIS/NEXIS information technology team.

"Release of the redesigned Academic Universe marks the culmination of many months of diligent, customer-centered design work and intelligent, focused implementation," said Mark Capaldini, president and CEO of Congressional Information Service, Inc., which reports to the NEXIS division of the LEXIS-NEXIS Group.

"Throughout this tremendous project, librarians, students, and faculty at nine U.S. universities--the CIS design partners--actively participated every step of the way in shaping the content, features, and functionality of the redesign," Capaldini said.

In addition to LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe, the new, unified CIS Universe Suite includes CIS Congressional Universe, CIS State Capital Universe, CIS Statistical Universe, and CIS History Universe, all of which have been improved as part of the redesign. …
