LIS Course Proves Worth of Information Professionals

The Publications Office at the Graduate School of Library Information Science (GS-LIS) at the University of Illionois at Urbana-Champaign has announced a new course, Information Consulting, which is made possible through a partnership between the GSLIS and the College of Commerce. The Information Consulting course is designed to provide students with real-world experience as information professionals by involving them in cross-functional teams working on actual projects for business and industry clients. Each student is assigned to work with a team of six to eight M.B.A. students, providing crucial assistance in accurately defining and satisfying the clients' project information needs. The M.B.A. students are enrolled in the College of Commerce's Office of Strategic Business Initiatives (OSBI), which functions as the consulting arm of the Illinois M.B.A. program. Some recent project assignments (with companies such as Dow Chemical, Proctor & Gamble, Lockheed Martin, and Lucent Technologies) have included the development of marketing strategies, business plans, market analyses, and financial models.
