Equity on the Information Super-highway

Information is the currency of democracy. Our jobs, education, health and self-governance depend on it. Just as libraries have always provided books and other information resources for all people regardless of ability to pay, today's libraries must also offer public access to electronic sources.

To gain support for this vital role, the ALA is sponsoring a national petition drive to collect signatures from those who agree there must be equity on the information superhighway and that it must begin with our nation's libraries.

The goal is to collect signatures from every public, school, college and university library to deliver to members of Capitol Hill on National Library Legislative Day on May 7.

The "Equity Petition" will be available online from the ALA home page at There will also be instructions on how to e-mail personalized messages of support to members of Congress. A copy of the petition is included. For best results, print on white paper.

1. Start collecting signatures. Post copies in the library. Ask Friends, trustees, faculty and students to collect signatures. …
