Billed as a new breed of interactive media for kids, SprocketWorks lives up to the buzz. Designed for the home market, but adaptable to schools, the program offers subscribers three new topics to explore each quarter, using learning activities that are both visually stunning and engaging. The first volume covers music, space, and U.S. history; the second takes on flight, horses, and chemistry.

This partly online "unencyclopedia" does a good job of pulling kids into topics by allowing them to experiment with various activities. For example, to learn about flight, users scroll through a visual timeline of planes and see videos of early flight attempts. They can click on plane parts to simulate flight patterns, and learn geography the subtle way through an interactive world map that matches airlines to their appropriate country. …
