Following massive interest in its first awards scheme, outdoor equipment manufacturer Lowe Alpine UK has announced that it is to grant a further 15,000 [pounds sterling] for the Lowe Adventure Awards 2000. The 1999 awards -- the winners of which will be announced in the next issue of Geographical -- attracted more than 60 applications many of which, according to Sue Mercer of the company's marketing department, "were on the expedition front". These included someone planning to trek the entire length of Madagascar on horseback, another applicant intending to climb eight of Europe's highest peaks and a proposed solo crossing of Greenland.

The awards are open to any individual or small noncommercial team planning to take part in an innovative adventure in 2000. There are five different categories and a prize of 1,000 [pounds sterling] cash plus Lowe Alpine clothing and equipment with a retail value of 2,000 [pounds sterling] for the winning team.

According to Lowe Alpine, the categories reflect the ranges and uses of its backpacks and clothing, and applicants are asked to position their applications into one of the following categories: mountain, "for mountaineering expeditions to the greater ranges, climbing snow and ice, mixed routes or big walls at altitude or in extreme locations, attempting new routes in previously unexplored regions"; trekking, for the "innovative traveller" going to an exotic or wilderness environment for exploration or study; active, the category for those "pushing the barriers of endurance through athletic challenge"; extreme, for those attempting a bold or "stunning" feat; and finally, fundraising, for those raising money on behalf of others in an unusual and original way through outdoor activity. …
