QUALITY ASSURANCE

The quality of the coastal waters around the UK is "generally extremely good", according to a report from the Marine Pollution Monitoring Management Group, and the low levels of contaminants measured are unlikely to pose a threat to marine life. The survey, the first phase of the National Monitoring Programme of the Marine Environment, looked at the chemical and biological quality of 87 marine monitoring stations and concluded that the quality of the UK marine environment "is mainly within national environmental quality standards".
