CLARE SHORT VISITS BOLIVIA

International development secretary Clare Short has visited Bolivia to see how the UK is helping remote communities. Her visit was based around the ancient city of Potosi where the Department for International Development (DFID) is planning a rural development project with the UN and the indigenous Ayoreo community. The people who live and work on the plantations of the tropical lowlands are re-learning the farming and land management secrets of their ancestors.

RARE BLUE BIRD SPOTTED

A bird thought to be extinct has been spotted on the Indonesian island of Sangihe. The beautiful blue Cerulean Paradise-flycatcher Eutrichomyias rowleyi had only been seen once in the last 125 years. Bin Niu, a member of the BP Conservation Programme project Action Sampiri, first spied two birds flying in the trees when he went to fetch water from a spring. The team has since recorded 22 individuals and believes there may be 100 birds surviving on the island. …
