Congress Takes Action on Fetal-TIssue Harvesting

Following on Insight's exposure of payments accompanying the delivery of fetal body parts to researchers (see "Harvesting Those Fetal Body Parts," Oct. 25), the House of Representatives has passed HR350, a resolution introduced by Republican Rep. Thomas Tancredo of Colorado, condemning the practice and laying the ground for future hearings.

In the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act of 1993, Congress gave the green light for scientists to use body parts for medical research but clearly prohibited the sale or purchase of t them. Yet abortion clinics have found a way to charge hefty "service fees" based on whether the researcher desires a leg, an ear, a heart or a brain of an aborted baby.

In referring to the price list for body parts utilized by harvesting companies, Republican Rep. Joseph Pitts of Pennsylvania said, "It's almost like, `Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, do you want a baby's ear?' I wish this gruesome price list were a cruel Halloween hoax, but it is not. …
