Cogix Ships ViewsFlash, Its Internet Polling and Survey Software

Article excerpt

Cogix Corp. has announced the release of ViewsFlash 2.3, a complete poll and survey publishing system for Web sites. According to the company, the toolkit allows site editors and producers to easily design, schedule, and publish polls and surveys, and includes a portal-strength vote processing engine that tabulates and displays statistically sound results in real time.

The system is already in use at some major sites, including Lycos,, Sony Music, and According to the company, ViewsFlash is ideally suited for portals, media publishers, e-commerce sites, advertising agencies, and intranets. ViewsFlash applications include, among others, polls for community building, member e-mail popularity contests, satisfaction interviews fore-shoppers, and employee relations on company intranet portals.

"We designed ViewsFlash from the ground up to be Web-savvy. Integrating with Web publishing systems; providing complete control over look and feel; browser-based authoring and management tools; fast real-time response; and true random sampling for surveys show our Web orientation," said Camilo Wilson, Cogix's founder. "Although the benefits of Web-based polls and surveys are widely recognized, creating them has previously been complex, tedious, error prone, and a drain on in-house resources. Now ViewsFlash makes it fast and easy to create polls, surveys, contests, and rating systems that entice and inform site visitors, increasing audience retention and recurring visits."

ViewsFlash helps design, test, schedule, and publish polls and surveys, ranging from a single question with radio buttons to, many questions also including check boxes, drop-down menus, and full-text fields in any mix. Required fields can be enforced, and polls can be protected against duplicate voting by a combination of cookies and duplicate IP address detection. When using free-form text entries, a profanity filter can substitute "****" for offensive words. Polls and surveys have a specific duration, after which results are automatically archived and published, and search keywords are generated.

Poll results, in full or in part, can be displayed instantly after voting in real time, so participants can compare their answers to others, or they can simply go to a "thank you" page after submitting their answers. According to the company, poll-result archives--content-rich treasure troves of audience attitudes and preferences--become a powerful community attraction. Ongoing results can also be published and updated periodically, and automatically delivered to chosen e-mail addresses.

Poll and survey responses are stored on the server as ASCII comma-delimited data. They can be retrieved through the poll-management application and exported into any popular statistical analysis or database package for further manipulation.

ViewsFlash understands the Web site production environment. Using extensible and reusable HTML templates, it publishes polls and surveys either as whole Web pages or as page fragments that appear on a Web page and change automatically as new surveys are scheduled. …
