WIMG Tops off Year with 25th Anniversary Event, Elections

At this year's Congress of Cities, Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) acknowledged its silver anniversary celebration with NLC leaders, WIMG leadership and many NLC friends and colleagues.

WIMG outgoing President Deanna Koski, Mayor Pro Tem, Sterling Heights, Mich., presided over this year's WIMG events, which included the special anniversary luncheon, joint workshops with several other constituency groups, a pre-conference seminar, and the joint constituency group shared networking room and Friday evening 75th anniversary reception.

Keynote speakers at the luncheon were California State Controller Kathleen Connell and Diane Wittenburg, Vice President, Southern California Edison.

"It was really a great opportunity to hear from two top women leaders in our state," said Lara Blakely, Councilwoman, Monrovia, Calif., who was elected president of WIMG at the group's membership meeting. "They are wonderful role models for us and they offer us great words of wisdom to help us guide our careers and service to our communities."

NLC President Bob Knight also offered remarks and recognized WIMG's achievements as part of the NLC leadership.

WIMG also received anniversary greetings from President Bill Clinton who recognized WIMG's contributions to the nation's cities through its work with NLC.

The new Board of Directors includes: President Blakely; Marie Lopez Rogers, Councilwoman, Avondale, Ariz., (First Vice President); Rita Sims Franklin, Councilwoman, Selma, Ala., (Second Vice President); Elizabeth Hayden-Kniss, Councilmember, Palo Alto, Calif., (Communications Officer); and Deanna Koski, Mayor Pro Tem (Immediate Past President).

At-large Board members are: Mamye BaCote, Councilmember, Newport News, Va.; Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, Vice Mayor, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Pat Dennis; Councilmember, Peoria, Ill.; Alice Flores, Councilmember, Waco, Tex. …
