No job security, little chance, if any, of training, no promotion and no company benefits...hardly an attractive career prospect. And yet the freelance market continues to increase.

When left university more than five years ago with an MA in marketing, I had decided advertising was for me. joined a graduate training programme and learned the tricks of the trade before you could say "single-minded proposition".

Within two years I was dissatisfied: there was more to advertising than the agency I was at. Freelancing offered me what I wanted - an opportunity to sample new agencies, work on new accounts with different people and betterpay.

Three years on, having worked at agencies such as Carlson, BHWG, TMW, Saatchis, EHS and Tequila on a variety of accounts, it's still rewarding and exciting.

People tend to see freelancing as only viable in the short-term, but it can be more than just a stop-gap measure. If you have the right attitude and experience it can mean a great career opportunity. …
