Open eBook Validator Now Available on the Web

NuvoMedia, Inc., creators of the Rocket eBook, and the Scholarly Technology Group (STG) of Brown University have launched the Open eBook (OEB) Validator. Designed as part of an ongoing development effort, the OEB Validator is a public service tool that enables authors and publishers to test their publications for OEB compliance. Before submitting to an e-book reading system, publishers can check their documents for OEB compliance via the Web at http://www.stg.brown.edu/service/oebvalid.

"Validation tools to check compliance to the OEB 1.0 specification will greatly aid in the creation of electronic content for e-book reading systems, and further enhance widespread adoption of the OEB specification. I expect to see many authors placing their content in OEB format, and this tool is the right step in that direction," said Victor McCrary, chair of the OEB Authoring Group, and group leader in the Information Technology Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which organized and hosted both the 1998 and 1999 Electronic Book Workshops.

"Tools like this make it much easier for anyone to produce Open eBook publications, and help eliminate unnecessary intermediaries between the author and the reader," said David Ornstein, chief technical officer of NuvoMedia. …
