Swets & Zeitlinger BV to Acquire Turpin Distribution Services, Ltd

Swets & Zeitlinger BV (Swets) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) have announced an agreement for Swets to acquire ownership of Turpin Distribution Services, Ltd. (Turpin), the journals and book distribution services company owned by RSC. The agreement is subject to due diligence and completion of contractual and authorizational arrangements.

Turpin, based in Letchworth, U.K., provides a range of global fulfillment and distribution services for research and scholarly publishers in the area of print and electronic publications. It has been trading for over 30 years and numbers among its clients Arnold, The British Library, the British Psychological Society, the Society of Chemical Industry, CRC Press, ICSA Publishing, Pion, The Royal Society, Whurr Publishers, and RSC.

Turpin will become part of a new Publisher Services Division at Swets that will offer a broad range of services to publishers throughout the world. Swets will also take over the 50-percent share ownership, which the RSC currently has in Turpin, Ltd.

Tom Inch, secretary general of RSC, said: "Turpin unfortunately is not core business for the RSC, and I believe that by joining the Swets Group, Turpin will benefit from having access to levels of investments, expertise, and business opportunities not so readily available from a charity organization, which must first and foremost concentrate on their publishing activities. Our confidence in continuing to receive the excellent service that Turpin has given the Royal Society of Chemistry over the past years has been shown by agreeing to a 5-year contract. …
