The Bet: Who will be the Tory candidate for London mayor?

The confusion surrounding the candidates for London mayor swings almost daily from Tory chaos to Labour chaos. Just as the Tories are reeling over the Archer affair, Labour shoots itself in the foot with accusations of dirty tricks. Apparently Ken Living-stone told journalists at a private Guardian lunch that Frank Dobson was "clinically depressed". This goes to show that there is no such thing as a private lunch. Even the disgraced lobbyist Derek Draper got in on the act by telling hacks that it wasn't him who spread this gossip. No one had said it was, but he will do anything for publicity, even pretend he is working for Livingstone.

The Tories, not to be outdone, have got into a complete mess by sacking a previously unheard-of front-bench spokesman for supporting gay rights and the abolition of Clause 28. They seem to have forgotten that the clear Tory favourite for mayor takes the same view. …
