Former University of Washington GSLIS Director Margaret Chisholm Dies at 78

Margaret Chisholm, director of the University of Washington Graduate School of Library and Information Science from 1981 to 1992, died of cancer November 21 at age 78.

Chisholm, who was 1988-89 president of the American Library Association, served as UW vice-president for University Relations and Development from 1975 to 1981, becoming the university's first female vice-president. She also served on the National Planning Committee for the White House Conference on Library and Information Services.

Under Chisholm's leadership, the UW GSLIS developed its current emphasis on information technology. Her daughters Janice Bonnet and Nancy Lane, both librarians, have established the Margaret Chisholm Motivate, Inspire, and Lead Fund--named for Chisholm's ALA presidential theme--to be used to bring library leaders to the school to inspire the next generation of librarians.
