It was a day to remember. on the eve of the 2000 U.S. Memory Championship, the prelude to August's Mind Sports Olympiad, peri invited founder Tony Buzan to visit Newsweek and run a mini- memory match of our own. The players: "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire's" first big winner, a high-school Intel scholarship finalist and five of peri's finest. The outcome: the kid stomped us. Hard. Her secret? "I'm in high school," she swore. "I don't do anything." But even she had nothing on the world's memory titans.

POEM

Time Limit: 15 minutes

Contestants must memorize an entire 57-line poem, then jot it down exactly as written on the original. Score one point for each correctly recalled word, every incidence of a capital letter and every punctuation mark, including italics and underlining.
