An Open Letter to the NACM-Membership from a Concerned Member

EDITORS' NOTE: This letter was sent to N4CM-National by a concerned member of NACM-Oregon concerning the issue of disaffiliation. We urge you to carefully consider whether your local NACM Affiliate should disaffiliate from NACM and to voice your opinion to both your local NACM and to NACM-National. Dear NACM Member:

Until recently, like many of my fellow credit professionals, I have been vaguely aware of the dispute between NACM-National and our local affiliate, NACM-Oregon. We have heard from Rod Wheeland, CCE, the President of NACM-Oregon and from the Chairman of our local Board of Directors, Bob Akin, that the differences are irreconcilable. We have heard very little, if at all, from NACM-National. On November 8, at a special information meeting of the Portland membership, we will be asked if we support NACM-Oregon's disaffiliation from NACM-National.

I decided to look into this issue. After gathering facts from all sides, I have decided that it is not in the best interests of my company or me to support disaffiliation from NACM-National.

My company pays dues to NACM-Oregon of $360 per year and from those dues, NACM-Oregon sends $34.50 per year to NACM-National on my behalf. I believe that my company gets good value for the dollars sent to NACM National. For $34.50 per year, my company receives the following benefits:

1. An annual subscription to Business Credit magazine. Each issue contains articles on important credit topics that are timely and well written. This magazine alone is $34.50 per year. Other credit publications charge as much as $370 per year.

2. Membership in a 103-year-old nationally recognized organization with a solid reputation. Three years ago, the United States Congress wanted input on bankruptcy reform. Congress went to NACM-National and asked for the thoughts and suggestions of NACM members. I was one of the participants in that process. Our voices were heard. Once again, a bankruptcy reform act--with many changes recommended by credit professionals like you and me--is making its way through Congress. NACM-National was asked to supply input because it is the expert in this field.
