Aucland Hires First Chief in UK Brand Push

Aucland, the European online auction company in which Groupe Arnault has a majority stake, has brought in ICL marketer Clare Golding as its first UK marketing chief in a bid to develop its brand.

Golding, 27, reports to UK managing director Kevin Sherwood. She will oversee a marketing budget of about [pounds]5.5m a year.

A [pounds]3.4m drive is planned for the first quarter of 2000. Sherwood will also begin a search for an advertising agency in the next month.

The brand is competing with QXL, e-Bay and News International's recently launched auction and entertainment site, Fired Up.com.

Golding spent four years at ICL, initially in business development roles before becoming a marketing manager, helping negotiate deals with Microsoft and Novell.

"We want to overcome any inhibitions new users might have about trading online and give them confidence. We're focused very heavily on customer service," said Golding.

Originally launched in France, Aucland expanded into the UK market in October last year and has since rolled out country-specific sites in Italy and Spain. …
