How did you get into recruitment?

More by luck than judgement. I was looking for a change of career that would use my marketing experience and qualifications, yet increase my job satisfaction. Marketing recruitment proved to be the perfect challenge.

What qualities do you need to succeed in this industry?

The Davis Company allows consultants a high level of autonomy. This requires self-motivation and accountable ownership. As our product is people, and therefore totally unpredictable, a calm head and a sense of humour help.

What are the challenges for the industry over the next few years?

The major challenge is a chronic skills shortage, which looks set to continue. Recruitment consultants need to encourage clients to recognise potential talent and invest in training. The Davis Company works with the marketing industry to improve recruitment and training practices, and recently sponsored the DMA Excellence in People Award, recognising agency training initiatives. The rise of the internet's role in recruitment is challenging traditional methods and consultancies must adapt. I hope the personal touch will not be lost.

What was your big break?

In 1993, I took 18 months out of my career to travel. I learned not to be afraid to take risks and broadened my outlook. On returning, I altered my career path and joined The Davis Company. I've never looked back.
