Why did you leave the J Walter Thompson brand consultancy Blue Logic to join Models 1?

It represented a significant opportunity as an already successful business that could be made more so with the incorporation of simple business efficiencies. In addition, the company's potential, as a brand property, seemed extremely promising.

What were the challenges that Models 1 faced when you joined?

Quickly to understand the dynamics of the business, to assess its strengths and weaknesses and to immediately implement a business development programme. This involved a refocusing of the company's marketing activities and the redevelopment of its corporate identity.

How did the Macintyre Undercover documentary on modelling affect your business?

It seems to have had little or no business impact. We are by no means complacent, although our industry tends to be regarded as such. However, we are a long established (31 years) and well respected company, and we absolutely disassociate ourselves from all the activities portrayed.

What was your big break?

Being made managing director at the Kirkwood Company at the age of 33 in 1980 and having the opportunity to steer my own destiny. …
