Microsoft has appointed Frances Fawcett as its first community affairs manager to strengthen its relationships with charities and local communities, and cultivate a more caring image.

The software giant's public image has taken a battering over the past two years, following an investigation by the US government accusing it of anti-competitive behaviour.

The case has received high profile coverage in the US press, fuelling criticism of the company from the media, competitors and consumers.

Fawcett, 33, will be responsible for overseeing a [pounds]4m community affairs budget and co-ordinating relationships with charities at both national and grass-roots level. The company is currently looking at contributing technology to a number of projects aimed at helping the elderly and the unemployed.

Her appointment also reflects Microsoft's increased activity in this area.

It has worked with the NSPCC on projects over the past five years, culminating in its collaboration in the charity's high-profile Full Stop campaign last March, which involved ad sponsorship and a [pounds]1m donation. …
