Harris Publishing Systems Corp., Melbourne, Fla., and Harlequin, Cambridge, Mass., are jointly developing and will distribute several "plug-and-play" digital work-flow products based on Harris MaxWorkFlow output management and Harlequin RIP technologies. Harlequin is to unveil at Drupa, then ship to its OEM partners, its next-generation RIP technology that incorporates MaxWorkFlow, a visual work-flow design tool to automate proofing and film or plate output processes. The 20- plus Harris-Harlequin modules also handle EPS/PDF optimization, down sampling, imposition, trapping, preflighting multiple file formats, and OPI built into the interpreter. Inc., Marina del Rey, Calif., will provide print/online classified ad placement at for five newspapers: the Denver Rocky Mountain News, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sun-Sentinel, Hartford (Conn.) Courant, Ventura County (Calif.) Star, and Snoqualmie Valley Record, near Seattle.

The arrangements allow each paper to have its own branded site - accessible through its Web site and powered by that enables advertisers to compose, schedule, and pay for ads at one location. is designed to give classified advertisers access to newspapers across the country.

Group West Systems California Ltd., Auburn, Calif., formed when Canada's Group West Systems Ltd. acquired Nova Publishing Systems and AISI, appointed Kirk Norlin as marketing director for Nova products. Norlin was last with System Integrators Inc.


K&F Printing Systems International, Granger, Ind., sold two Plate Express III automatic exposure units with vision punch benders to The San Diego Union-Tribune, and a complete plateroom system consisting of two Plate Express II units, subtractive plate processors, vision punch bender, and automatic plate punches to The Gazette in Montreal. Both sites will install the equipment in May.

K&F has hired Paul Biorn as digital technical service representative. A senior customer engineer with Autologic for 12 years, Biorn most recently owned Chicago-based Cenet Services Inc., provider of maintenance for typesetting and imagesetting equipment.
