Salt Lake City breaks in its new downtown light rail

* When the speech-making and ribbon-cutting were finally over and Salt Lake City's brand-new Trax (short for transit express) light-rail system began running from downtown's Delta Center south to Sandy in December, Johney Colledge was thrilled.

"The best part of switching from driving buses to driving trains is getting off the roads," he said on a training run just before the system opened. A city bus operator for 33 years, Colledge isn't going to miss the traffic jams, the construction detours, or other frustrated drivers.

Trax director of rail service Paul O'Brien believes that once they try it, Wasatch Front commuters and shoppers heading downtown will be equally pleased. "Trains will run almost 55 miles per hour for most of the 15-mile run, and we're using technology that's worked in other cities--including the same type of railcars used in Denver and San Diego--to ensure reliable service. …
