David Carr, editor of the Washington City Paper and editorial committee chair of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, will leave the paper in May (and forgo his AAN role) to join a Web start-up in New York.

Carr's new gig is national correspondent for newspapers and magazines at Powerful Media - an online media and entertainment news service created by Kurt Andersen, Deanna Brown, and Michael Hirschorn.

An all-star editorial staff split between New York and Los Angeles (the New York Observer's Lorne Manly, also a former senior editor of Brill's Content, will edit Carr, for example) will cover these converging industries round the clock, focusing initially on the music, film, TV, magazine, newspaper and book-publishing sectors. The site will target media and entertainment industry professionals, and provide customized, branded services for a range of Web and wireless content-delivery platforms.

"I'm going to be covering old media in a new-media venture, and it will be, over and over, about how people are positioning for a much different publishing and media environment," said Carr. …
